Worst USA Cities for Asthma Risk

The U.S. Asthma Capitals is an annual research project of the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA). This detailed ranking sheet provides a summary of performance on 12 individual factors and information used to develop and rank metro areas in the "Top 100" list. The 12 factors fall into the following three categories: Prevalence Factors (that show how prevalent asthma is), Risk Factors (that may increase the risk of asthma symptoms for people) and Medical Factors (that measure healthcare utilization among asthma patients).

Atlanta Rises to 100 in 2007

Atlanta, Georgia is the "winner" of 2007 worst metro area of asthma suffers. Eighteenth in 2005 to fourth in 2006, Atlanta has been in the top 20 for several years and is not heading in the right direction. Philadelphia, PA, 2007 #2 and #3 in 2006 showed an even faster rise to the top from #29 in 2005. But few beat the meteric rise of Raleigh-Durham metro area in North Carolina from #53 in 2006 and #48 in 2005 to #3 in 2007. San Antonio shows another dramatic climb - going from #89 in 2005 and #39 in 2006 to #11 in 2007 While McAlen, Texas has risen to #27 from #74 in 2005.

Baton Rouge, Louisiana, scoring 81 in 2005 had dropped to #15 in 2006 only to rise to #87 in 2007.

Scranton, PA has remained in the "Top 10" for the last 3 years while Knoxville escaped this category in 2006 with a #11 ranking.

New to the "Top 10" in 2007 are Harrisburg, PA and Little Rock, Arkansas. New to the "Top 20" in 2007 are San Antonio, Texas, Los Angeles and Fresno, California, Chicago, Illinois, Charlotte, North Carolina, and Mobile, Alabama.

Metro Areas Improving Asthma Risk

Congratulations to New York City, NY! NYC is not in the top 100 in 2007 (#58 in 2007, #72 in 2005). Other cities showing significant improvement include Memphis, TN (from #2 in 2005 to #30 in 2007), Toledo, OH (from #4 in 2005 to #54 in 2007), Washington, DC (from #5 in 2005 to #52 in 2007), Springfield, MA (from #8 in 2005 to #55 in 2007), Indianapolis, IN (from #11 in 2005 to #43 in 2007), Youngstown, OH (from #8 in 2006 to #62 in 2007), Canton, OH (from #14 in 2006 to #79 in 2007), Phoenix, AZ (from #14 in 2005 to #44 in 2007), Tucson, AZ (from #61 in 2005 to #81 in 2007), Columbus, OH (from #12 in 2005 to #58 in 2007).
