The American Humane Association's mission is preventing cruelty, abuse, neglect, and exploitation of children and animals. AHA's Child Welfare Division has worked for many years to improve the public and private child welfare systems so they can respond more effectively to the needs of abused and neglected children. AHA is a national association of child protection programs, agencies, and individuals, and its membership includes State and local social service agencies, child advocates, courts, hospitals, schools, mental health professionals, and concerned citizens in every State. The American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children addresses all facets of the professional response to child maltreatment: prevention, assessment, intervention, and treatment. APSAC membership reflects all of the major disciplines that respond to child maltreatment, including mental health, medicine, child protective services, and law enforcement. General Scope: The National Children's Advocacy Center provides prevention, intervention, and treatment services to physically and sexually abused children and their families with a child-focused team approach. NCAC also operates the Southern Regional Children's Advocacy Center, which provides education and training to support the development of Children's Advocacy Centers nationwide.Training Specific: The NCAC is one of the providers of training for professionals working with abused children and their families. These trainings are both multidisciplinary and discipline-specific. The Missouri coalition known as P.A.N.D.A (Prevent Child Abuse and Neglect Through Dental Awareness) was created to address a lack of reporting by dental professionals of suspected child abuse and neglect. P.A.N.D.A's educational programs include a history of family violence in our society, clinical examples of confirmed child abuse and neglect, and discussions of legal liability issues involved in reporting child maltreatment. Programs now extend beyond dental audiences to include physicians, nurses, teachers, child care workers, and anyone interested in preventing family violence.
