Speed Up Login ~ Windows 95/98

The default Windows 95/98 DUN installation includes a lot of options that aren't needed for a typical Internet dial-up connection. Removing these options can speed up the login process and improve performance. Here's how:

  1. Double-click My Computer.
  2. Double-click Dial Up Networking.
  3. Find your Chelsea Data connection and click it with the right mouse button.
  4. Select Properties from the pop-up menu.
  5. Select the Server Types tab at the top of the window (or, in older versions of Win 95, the button at the bottom).
  6. Check to make sure that all settings under Advanced Options are unchecked. (There are three options under Win 95 and five under Win 98.)
  7. Unless you know that you need them for some reason, make sure that NetBEUI and IPX/SPX are unchecked under Allowed Network Protocols.
  8. Click OK on all the screens to save the changes.

Keeping AOL Instant Messenger from Opening at Netscape startup

All you need to do is click AIM's Setup button, select Misc, and uncheck Start AIM When Windows Starts. (Yes, we find this annoying, too!) See the Unofficial Netscape FAQ for more, including instructions for removing AIM entirely.

Connect to AOL via TCP/IP from WinGate Client on Your LAN

  1. Look for a text file from the AOL installation under aol30/ccl/ called TCP.CCL. It controls the TCP/IP login process for AOL.
  2. Change the default name from AmericaOnline.aol.com to the hostname of your WinGate server (You can find this under TCP/IP Properties). The login process now points to your WinGate server when you log in to AOL.
  3. Next, add a TCP Mapping Service in Gatekeeper on your WinGate server with the AOL listening port, which is 5190, and add a mapped link that points 5190 to AmericaOnline.aol.com. Now you can log in to AOL via TCP/IP from both your server and your client machine.
